Trachoma, an excruciatingly painful eye disease caused by Chlamydia bacteria, is still the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. Repeated episodes of infection and inflammation leave patients’ eye-lids scarred, effectively turning the lashes inwards. As a result, constant scratching of the cornea leads to irreversible blindness. More than 229 million people still live in trachoma-endemic regions.
